Recommendations

***Mail-order or online: we really like Campmor. 1-888-226-7667 or www.campmor.com

Duffel Bag for travel and storage at camp or in van trailer. Many campers carry-on to the plane everything needed for camp in their duffle-bag. This is your locker at camp.

Sleeping bag - lightweight, synthetic, small and compressible rated between 35-50 degrees (not Goose Down). We really like Slumberjack Tour Lite 40 Degree Sleeping Bag at 2 pounds 4 ounces: Campmor Item Number: 68552.

Daypack - a school book bag or very small backpack. For plane ride, day hikes, climbing trips and van travel.

Water bottle - plastic 1 quart. Nalgene Wide Mouth Loop-Top 32 oz. Campmor Item Number: 80900 or equivalent.

Mess kit - mug, knife, fork, spoon, plastic bowel. We like GSI Outdoors Cascadian 1 Person 7 pc. Table Set. Campmor Item Number: 82393 or equivalent.

LED Headlamp (non halogen), triple A (AAA) Battery LED. Please no heavy, large flashlights. Campmor #82769. Extra batteries are not necessary with LED headlamps.
Plastic Whistle on string to carry around neck. Campmor #84603.

Hiking Shoe: Inexpensive, lightweight, ankle height or over the ankle Gore-Tex shoes work great. We like Nike, Merrell, Columbia or Hi-Tec. Heavy leather mountaineering boots are not needed.

Old Tennis Shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. An extra pair may be substituted for sports sandals/water shoes.

Sport Sandals with a heel strap that will stay on your feet while rafting or swimming. Recommend Teva Hurricane Campmor # 14013 or equivalent. Please no leather sandals or flip flops for swimming or rafting.

Rain Gear - inexpensive waterproof ponchos are fine. If you bring a rain jacket and pants, make sure they are waterproof, not water resistant. The jacket should have a hood.

Mid-weight warm Fleece Top (200 weight minimum) or a warm 100% wool sweater, or equivalent.

Long Underwear - synthetic polypropylene is best. Recommended and great for chilly mornings in the high mountains!

Warm Ski Hat - fleece, wool or synthetic “ski hat” – not cotton. Recommended and great for chilly mornings in the high mountains!

Short Sleeve Synthetic Camp T-Shirts like a Duofold Youth Performance Tee Campmor Item Number: Campmor 05663.

Swim Suit - girls are required to have a 1 piece suit for modesty and comfort when riding on rafts, sliding rock and swimming. No 2 piece or tankinis, please.

Underwear - cotton recommended for girls.

Hiking Socks light-weight wool/synthetic blend socks for hiking.

Hand Sanitizer Nice'N Clean Anti-Bacterial Wipes Item Number: 44760

Insect Repellent - pump (non aerosol required for safety). Campmor #83625 or equivalent.

Laundry Bag Campmor #41440 or equivalent. A plastic garbage bag is fine.

Bandanas - very useful when camping.

Cotton Towel – cotton is fine but a Camp Bath Towel is quick drying. Campmor #83013.

Pajamas - campers and girls often use shorts and a T-shirt at camp.

What to bring. What not to bring.

MAG Provides  The majority of the gear and equipment for camp is provided. This includes tents, backpacks, ground pads and all technical gear. Campers may bring their own equipment, but staff will evaluate the appropriateness of personal gear on the first day.

What not to bring  Please help us promote camp values and safety. As they attract animals, please do not bring snacks, candy, gum or other foods (we will have plenty of snacks and fruit for the trip). Also, do not bring fireworks, knives of any sort, hatchets, anything that is a spray aerosol, shovels, inappropriate comics or magazines, I-Pods, CD players, expensive cameras, hair dryers, or electronic games. Cell phones used for plane travel will be kept in the camp office during camp. Camper check-in on arrival to will include an inspection of their belongings to ensure they have everything needed for camp. Not needed or prohibited items like electronics will be kept in the camp office or sent home with parents.

***FYI  Campers are hard on clothes and gear, so inexpensive is best! Choose small and lightweight. In the outdoors, avoid cotton when possible. Synthetics dry and stay warm better than cotton.

Lost and Found  We know that parents want campers to return home with all of their belongings! Everyone will have similar looking gear…..so PLEASE MARK EVERYTHING clearly with a Sharpie. Despite our best efforts, campers occasionally lose things. Please talk to your camper about his/her personal responsibility in keeping up with his or her belongings!

Airplane Travel  Carry-on a book-bag or day pack with a change of clothes, prescriptions and anything your camper might need for the first few hours or night should his/her checked duffel arrive late. Many campers carry-on their duffle bag with everything needed for camp. Cell-phones and music player are great for travel, but will be held in the office during camp.
