"Crockett Cabin" by John Goins

You might be wondering why the cabin you’re looking at is called the Crockett Cabin. Well, I’ll tell you.

Hike upstream on the west bank of the Nolichucky River for a spell and you’ll find where Limestone Creek adds its burden of water and sediment and gravel to the Nolichucky. You might have to have a local to guide you.

Stop there and search the north bank of the creek. You’ll notice the weeds and brush and trees aren’t so thick there as they are on the south bank of the creek. You’ll also notice that the north side of the creek is higher than the south side, high enough that Nolichucky flood waters could never reach the top. You’re looking at the birthplace of David Davy Crockett. And yes, that’s his full name.

Now notice the trees growing on the banks of the Nolichucky all the way to the top of the highest ridge. You’re looking at giant poplar trees. Those trees will sometimes grow straight as an arrow, 10 feet in diameter and 80 feet tall, with not a limb for the first 40 feet.

We’re talking about softwood trees now, sorta like pine, not hardwood trees like oak and chestnut and walnut and locust. Now if you were gonna build yourself a cabin, and you were gonna have to cut the trees down with an ax, not a chain saw, what kind of tree would you prefer to work on? The poplar, of course.

And that’s what John Crockett did when he arrived in the 1780's after whipping the Red Coats in the Revolution. He was given the land for his service in the war, but he had to take his ax and clear the land and build his cabin. In this cabin Davy Crockett was born, August 17, 1786, the fifth son of nine kids. That’s more than a hundred years ago, but today you can still stand in the cabin where Davy was born.

But that’s not exactly right either. You see, the Crocketts were a restless bunch, and soon moved on from the Nolichucky. And over the years other families lived in that cabin of poplar logs and added to it and changed things around some.

But take a close look at those poplar logs. See how wide they are? Those were monster trees. Look closer and you can see the ax and adze marks on the logs. They were split by hand.

How do we know this is the cabin where Davy Crockett was born? We don’t know for sure, but many years ago the original owner of this land found a cabin in eastern Tennessee that all the locals called the Crockett cabin. The locals claimed that this was the original Crockett cabin.

So the original owner of this land accepted that legend, too. He took the cabin apart, marked each log, and then reassembled it here once more on the bank of the Nolichucky River. Then he nailed the sign over the door.
